Across Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception, our primary focus during these first weeks of term is to ensure every child feels safe, seen and valued in their new environment. The Birth to 5 Matters framework emphasises that emotional well-being and secure attachments are the foundation upon which all future learning rests. When children transition into new classrooms, adapt to updated daily routines, and meet new teachers and classmates, their emotional system is working hard to process these big changes.
In our Early Years classrooms, we intentionally prioritise relationship building during this settling in phase. Warm, attentive interactions with adults give children a secure base from which to explore. Across all our age groups, children have been learning each other’s names, practicing turn taking, co-creating classroom boundaries, sharing feelings and discovering what is means to belong to a caring learning community. Whether it is a Pre-Nursery child learning to trust a new key person, a Nursery child inviting a friend to build a tower, or a Reception child learning how to negotiate roles during cooperative play, these foundational connections are building key social and emotional skills that will support them throughout the year.
Through guided play and story times focused on feelings and collaborative activities, our EYFS team models empathy, active listening and conflict resolution. This helps our youngest learners begin to construct strong, lifelong tools for self-regulation. By establishing warm, predictable routines and positive peer connections early on, we lower a child’s cognitive load and create an environment where they feel brave enough to ask questions, take learning risks and express their feelings.
As we move forward, we will continue to nurture these important relationships and support each child as they grow in confidence, independence and curiosity. The time invested in building trust and a sense of belonging during these early weeks is invaluable, as it lays the foundation for children to fully engage in the rich learning opportunities ahead. We are already so proud of the kindness, resilience and enthusiasm our children are showing, and we look forward to seeing these relationships continue to flourish throughout the year.
