Maths Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate children’s learning through fun, creativity, and exploration. Throughout the week, we enjoy exploring numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving through a range of exciting activities that help children see that maths is all around us. By making maths enjoyable and meaningful, we encourage children to develop confidence, curiosity, and a positive attitude towards learning.
During Maths Week, we celebrate children’s learning through different aspects of the curriculum, linking maths to art, construction, stories, outdoor play, and everyday experiences. Children explore shapes through creative artwork, investigate numbers through games and challenges, and develop their thinking skills through practical, hands-on activities. This cross-curricular approach helps children understand that maths is not just about counting, but about exploring, questioning, and discovering.
In the EYFS, maths learning is supported through a curiosity-led approach. We encourage children to ask questions, explore ideas, and investigate their own interests. When children are curious, they become more engaged and motivated to learn. Staff support this by providing open-ended resources, meaningful challenges, and opportunities for children to solve problems in their own way.
Through play-based learning, children develop their understanding of number, shape, space, and measure while building important skills such as communication, cooperation, and critical thinking. Maths Week allows us to celebrate these achievements and recognise how children learn best when they are active, involved, and inspired.
In Pre-Nursery has been filled with the lively sounds of trains, cars, and rescue vehicles. The children explored numbers up to 7, taking part in counting activities that were fun, engaging, and interactive. We also explored the fascinating world of traffic lights, talking about their colours and why they are important for keeping everyone safe on the roads.
Our song of the week was Down by the Station, which had everyone singing along with great enthusiasm. We also enjoyed reading Old MacDonald Had a Truck, a lovely story that brought the adventures of Old MacDonald and lots of vehicle noises to life. It has been a week full of exploration, creativity, and excitement as the children continued to develop their early maths skills through play.
In Nursery, the children have continued their adventure with the story We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. To bring the story to life, the children went outside for a real bear hunt, where each brave explorer found a bear with a special number on it. This turned our outdoor play into a fun opportunity to practise counting and use our critical thinking skills. As part of Maths Week, Nursery have also been exploring the wonderful world of 2D shapes. The children discovered how different shapes can be arranged to make new shapes and used them to create their own pictures, linking maths with creativity and play.
In Reception, our Maths Week focus has been number 10. The children enjoyed listening to the story 10 Apples Up On Top by Dr Seuss, which helped us explore counting in a fun and meaningful way. We used real apples to practice counting and to investigate number bonds to 10, and we used Numicon to support our understanding of how numbers fit together. The children also enjoyed lots of singing, including the number bonds song and songs with the number 10 such as 10 Green Bottles and 10 Little Aliens. We finished the week by creating a spring display to consolidate our understanding of number bonds to 10, celebrating all the learning that has taken place during Maths Week.
