Students' grades only ever tell part of the story. Every day, many of our students give their best outside the classroom — on the sports field, in the art classroom, backstage, in leadership roles, and in the kindness they show one another. This year, we are introducing something designed to notice that: the Britannica Diploma.
There are three main reasons why we are introducing this. Firstly, to recognise our students who already get involved in all these areas. Secondly, to encourage those who do not yet get involved to step outside their comfort zone, explore their interests, and discover new ones. Thirdly, to help students collect evidence that will support their university applications and personal statements, creating a bank of experiences they can draw on to demonstrate to universities that they have a well-rounded profile, which is what many universities look for in a student, alongside grades.
The Diploma is structured around three levels, each building on the one before. Students begin with Bronze, recognising participation as they get involved across the sixteen strands. They then progress to Silver, which reflects a deeper level of commitment — staying the course and dedicating themselves consistently to the areas that matter most to them. Finally, students work towards Gold, the highest of the three levels, marking real leadership: leading initiatives, mentoring others, and setting an example for the rest of the school. Students typically work through one level each year, building steadily from participation to leadership over their time in secondary school.
Every strand has been designed with this same purpose in mind — to push students beyond their comfort zone, encouraging them to try something new, take on responsibility, and build the confidence and personal skills that will last well beyond their school years.
All students in Secondary have been introduced to the Diploma, with Monday 7th September marking the deadline for this first stage. From then, each student will receive their own Evidence Booklet, a personal record they will build up throughout the year as they gather examples of what they have achieved.
Parents who wish to know more are invited to a dedicated information evening on Friday 4th September at 9:30am, in the school Theatre, where the Diploma will be explained in full. A detailed letter, including answers to frequently asked questions, will follow for all families shortly after. Form tutors remain the first point of contact for any questions in the meantime.
