As we begin our final term, the classroom is filled with a strong sense of confidence, independence, and enthusiasm for learning. The children return settled and secure in their environment, with familiar routines allowing them to quickly re-engage and take greater ownership of their learning. This time of year provides a valuable opportunity to build on the foundations already established, while continuing to support development across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum in a meaningful and engaging way.
Learning is deeply rooted in play, with a careful balance of adult-guided experiences and child-initiated exploration. The environment is thoughtfully organised to encourage curiosity, independence, and sustained engagement. Children confidently move between areas of provision, selecting resources, developing their own ideas, and working collaboratively with their peers. These everyday experiences support their personal, social and emotional development, as they learn to manage feelings, build friendships, and develop resilience when faced with challenges.
Communication and language development continues to flourish through rich interactions, storytelling, and imaginative play. Adults play an important role in modelling language, extending conversations, and encouraging children to express their ideas with increasing clarity and confidence. Alongside this, physical development is embedded throughout the day, whether through outdoor play that builds strength and coordination or fine motor activities that support early writing skills. You may notice greater control, precision, and confidence in how children move and use tools.
Literacy learning is woven naturally into the environment, with children engaging in mark-making, early writing, and a wide range of reading opportunities. They are beginning to apply their phonics knowledge in purposeful ways, whether through labelling, storytelling, or recognising familiar words. Mathematics is explored through practical, hands-on experiences, where children count, compare, sort, and recognise patterns within their play. Mathematical language is encouraged and modelled, helping children to make sense of their learning in real-life contexts.
Exploration and curiosity are further supported through opportunities to develop understanding of the world. Children ask questions, investigate, and make connections through their experiences, whether they are exploring the outdoor environment, discussing their own lives, or engaging in simple problem-solving activities. At the same time, expressive arts and design provide a space for creativity to flourish, with children using a range of materials, music, and imaginative play to express their ideas freely and confidently.
This term offers a wonderful opportunity to see just how much progress has been made. The classroom is an active and engaging space where learning may look different from more formal approaches, but every activity is purposeful and carefully planned. Children are increasingly independent, confident in their choices, and proud of what they can do.
This final term is a time to consolidate learning, nurture confidence, and celebrate how far the children have come. It is a pleasure to see them approach their learning with such curiosity, independence, and joy, and we look forward to all the experiences and achievements still to come.
Reception have settled back into the classroom as they begin their final term of the year, returning with growing confidence and independence. The children have enjoyed sharing their holiday experiences, practising their listening skills and answering questions about what others have said, which is supporting their Communication and Language development. This week, their learning has been inspired by the story Which Food Will You Choose?, leading to discussions about different food groups and healthy choices. The children designed their own plates, creating balanced meals using a range of colourful foods, before working in pairs to make a rainbow fruit salad. They carefully chose, chopped, and mixed the fruit, showing teamwork and developing their Physical Development skills, and enjoyed tasting their creations. In Maths, the children have been exploring 3D shapes, learning about their properties and identifying 2D shapes within them, showing enthusiasm as they recognise shapes in their environment.
Nursery have also had a wonderful start to the term, making the most of the warmer weather and enjoying plenty of time outdoors. The garden has been full of excitement, especially as the children noticed that the seeds planted a few weeks ago have started to sprout, with small plants appearing and flowers beginning to bloom. This has sparked lots of curiosity and discussion, supporting their Understanding the World. Back in the classroom, the children have been deeply engaged in a range of stories, with Muncha, Muncha, Muncha inspiring a growing interest in fruits and vegetables. They have enjoyed talking about their favourite foods, sharing ideas, and exploring these themes through imaginative play, supporting both their Communication and Language development and creativity within Expressive Arts and Design.
In Pre-Nursery, the children have had a busy and exciting week learning all about minibeasts, including ants, caterpillars, butterflies, tadpoles, and frogs. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring the garden in the lovely weather, discovering the world around them, and observing nature up close. The children have also loved getting to know our classroom snails, showing curiosity and care as they watched them move and explore. Our song of the week, “MMM MMM Frog,” has been a big hit, and the children have enjoyed joining in with enthusiasm. We have also been sharing the story Teeny Weeny Tadpole, which has supported their understanding of life cycles in a fun and engaging way.
