With the warmer weather the children in EYFS have enjoyed having the opportunity to spend even more time outdoors learning and exploring the nature in our school garden. Please see below an outline of the key learning in each class this week.

Pre-Nursery
This week Pre-Nursery have carried on with the theme of a mouse through the rhyme ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’. In this rhyme, a small mouse likes to run up and down the clock. We have focused on making the ‘tick, tock’ sound of the clock learning the meaning of ‘up’ and ‘down’. Pre-Nursery have explored time through this rhyme whilst exploring a clock and sequencing daily events. Using our daily visual timetable, we talked about what is happening ‘now’, ‘next’ and ‘later. We have used our arm movements to explore how the hands on a clock move round, and made our own clock in our arts and craft activity. We have also been singing songs to help us sequence daily events including, ‘Here we go round the Mulberry Bush’ and ‘I wake up’.

Nursery
We have had a busy and wonderful week as we have continued our learning journey across Language and Literacy, exploring rhyme. Nursery have now developed very good listening skills and are now able to recognise many rhyming word. This week we explored the Dr Seuss book, "Green Eggs and Ham." The children enjoyed making their own eggs and ham in our outdoor area and then used the talk boards to record sentences about what foods they like and dislike.

In Maths we had a strong focus on number this week. We explored simple problems counting and writing simple number sentences with addition and equal symbols. Almost all children now recognise their numbers to 5 and some children even to 10, they can write them and count the correct quantity which we will continue to practice.

Reception
This week we read a new Julia Donaldson story, ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ and had lots of fun exploring the story. The children used the story as a basis to create their own midnight feast menu and did some descriptive writing. We worked in groups to act out the different characters in the story, remembering and using the repetitive language. We then used different materials to make our own ‘Gruffalo Child’s’ paper plate faces.

In our Phonics lessons we continued to learn new sounds. The children found different words that contain their new sounds and had a go at blending these with sounds we have already learnt to make different words.

During Maths lessons, we continued learning how to tell the time. The children firstly reviewed telling the time to the hour before solving time problems; finding times one hour earlier and later. We also took advantage of a very sunny Tuesday and went outside to play ‘What time is it Mr Wolf?’ which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
