This week, Year 9 Geography introduced the tropic of international development. During our first lesson, students were presented with the definition of development and how it applies to individual nations. Students were asked to offer their opinions on how far along the “road of development” (drawn on the whiteboard) certain nations were. They were encouraged to recount their own experiences of different countries and to speculate upon the how developed they believed those nations to be. It led to some interesting discussions! The class also did a case study comparison between young people living in countries with varying levels of development.
In the second lesson, students focused on the practical key indicators used to gauge development across the world – such as infant mortality, life expectancy, adult literacy rates and access to clean drinking water.
