Change, Adapt and Save Eggy!
What a week it has been at Britannica! STEAM Week 2026 brought our Primary students together for a week of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, all wrapped up in one very important mission: saving Eggy!
The week started with a bang as our Secondary colleagues treated students to an assembly packed with spectacular science experiments. With imaginations sparked and excitement building, the students threw themselves into their mission. Teachers were soon inundated with questions about Eggy, what challenges awaited him next and whether they would be able to get him home safely!
Throughout the week, students tackled a mixture of class and House challenges, testing different aspects of STEAM. They researched, designed, built, tested and adapted their ideas, discovering that the first solution is not always the best one.
Monday: Sailing into Adventure!
Our first challenge saw students design and build wind powered vessels to help Eggy cross the river. Students experimented with different hull designs, sails and materials before putting their creations to the test. The highlight was undoubtedly the moment Eggy entered the boat, as everyone cheered on their designs and discovered which vessels could successfully make the journey!
Tuesday: Deep Sea Rescue!
On Tuesday, Eggy found himself in trouble at the bottom of the sea! Working in House teams, students had a limited budget of STEAM Pounds to spend on resources and needed to devise a scientific method to rescue him from the bottom of a bucket of water.
The ingenuity on display was fantastic. Teams experimented with different approaches, refined their designs and kept trying when things did not go to plan. It was a brilliant combination of science, mathematics, engineering and financial decision making.
Wednesday: Robot Road Trip!
By Wednesday, Eggy needed a vehicle to help him travel along a dusty road. Students became programmers and engineers, coding Micro and building trailers to transport Eggy successfully around a course.
There was plenty of testing, debugging, and troubleshooting, alongside some brilliant teamwork. It was also wonderful to see students working with secondary and student helpers, sharing ideas, and learning from one another.
Thursday: The Great Eggy Launch!
Just when Eggy thought he was getting closer to home, he encountered a catapult! Students had to design and build protective cases to keep him safe after being launched through the air.
Teams experimented with different structures and materials, considering how to absorb impact and protect their fragile passengers. There was plenty of anticipation as the designs were put to the ultimate test!
