There are a hundred places where I fear
To go—so with his memory they brim.
And entering with relief some quiet place
Where never fell his foot or shone his face
I say, ‘There is no memory of him here!’
And so stand stricken, so remembering him.
Edna St. Vincent Millay, 'Time Does Not Bring Relief'
Students marked Remembrance Day in today's Secondary Assembly — as close we could get to the eleventh hour of the eleventh month that marks the Armistice of 1914 — but, whilst the commemoration may have begun following the First World War in Europe, our students were given the opportunity to reflect on the horrors of war and conflict around the world to the present day. Poetry was read in different languages, focusing on the victims of violence and the impact of loss and suffering, and students created artwork centred on their collective hope for peace and reconciliation.
