Head of Mathematics
BSc Hons, PGCE
My journey to China began in South East London, where I had moved after completing first my Mathematics degree at Bath University and then my PGCE. I taught ages 11-18 for four years at a diverse school with students from a number of backgrounds. My Further Mathematics A level classes often featured students originally from China, so to get to know them better I started learning to speak Chinese, which was a challenge I enjoyed. When the opportunity arose to move abroad, I took it, and am about to start my third year in China.
In my subject Mathematics in particular the seemingly always looming examination pressure can potentially cause some of the joy to be stripped from topics. I relish the challenge of structuring lessons that cause students to think, rather than simply remember, helping to develop their problem-solving abilities and preparing them for further study in their chosen area. As with any skill this needs to be introduced gradually, but the aim is to promote curiosity and resilience, which leads to more enjoyable lessons for all.

During my tour of Britannica last year, I asked a student what they enjoyed about the school, to which he responded; "It feels like being part of a big family." My experience so far has confirmed this comment. Upon graduating from the University of Cape Town, I worked as an ESL teacher in Shanghai from 2015 until joining Britannica last year. I quickly felt part of the Britannica family with being immersed in a positive teaching and learning environment wherein all members strive for progress and excellence.

Sia Li
EAL Teacher
MA, BA
Having always had a love of learning languages, I chose to pursue a Master’s degree in Hong Kong. My undergraduate studies allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of language processes and development. I specialised in language development and the process of human being; native language, age, personality, motivation, cognition as well as the sociological effects on language process and development. This knowledge has allowed me to be more aware of the factors that need to be considered when planning for every lesson and the importance of taking into consideration all individual needs.
My previous teaching experience as a member of EAL & English departments provided me an opportunity to work with students from various academic and cultural backgrounds. I was responsible for the speaking and listening curriculum, which allowed me to understand these aspects of the language curriculum and adapt teaching methods to ensure all students were able to make progress and succeed.
I have worked as a housemistress of a prestigious international boarding school, helping me to gain further experiences which enable me to ensure that all students’ needs are catered for effectively.

Jaco Olivier
PE Teacher
B.ed. Intermediate & Senior
I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher and finished my degree in Education in 2017.
As a child, I had a few amazing teachers who taught me a lot when I was at school. This made me realize that I can also make a difference in other children’s lives. It is one of the best feelings to see the excitement in a child’s face when he or she succeeds at something. As an educator, I can help them to achieve their goals. I want to be remembered as the teacher who gave every child every chance, everyday.
I will be joining the Physical Education department at Britannica this year. I am very excited as I have always been passionate about sport, I firmly believe that physical education can have a huge impact on students, both physically and mentally. My goal at Britannica is to deliver engaging lessons, foster a love of sport and physical wellbeing and provide opportunities for students to develop their skills in different sports.

Ineke Oosthuizen
Head of Art
B.ed. Intermediate & Senior (Art + Drama)
I graduated as a B.ed Intermediate and Senior Phase teacher at Cape Peninsula University of Technology where I majored in Art and Drama in education. I am the current art teacher for Primary and Secondary students. This is my first year with Britannica and I enjoy working with such engaged and creative students. I have been teaching in China for the past four years and taught in South-Africa prior to moving to China. Art and teaching have been a lifelong passion and I hope to inspire the same passion in the students. In addition to focusing on Art and Design as a practical subject I enjoy collaboration and integration of other subjects. I believe that Art is a skill that can be taught and is not reliant on talent although passion and dedication is key to success. My main goal is to teach my students thinking and problem solving skills while developing their practical application of knowledge to their own work.
