In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we place great importance on helping children to understand the diverse world in which they are growing up. From their earliest experiences in school, children are supported to develop a positive sense of who they are, while learning to value and respect the similarities and differences between themselves and others. This early understanding helps children to feel confident, included and secure within our school community.
Through the EYFS curriculum, children learn about people, culture and communities in ways that are meaningful and relevant to their lives. Practitioners encourage children to talk about their own families, traditions and experiences, creating opportunities for everyone to feel heard and valued. By listening to one another, sharing ideas and learning together, children begin to understand the importance of mutual respect, kindness and tolerance — values that are embedded naturally within everyday practice.
Our learning is guided by a curiosity-led approach, where children’s interests, questions and fascinations help shape the experiences we provide. Practitioners carefully observe children and use these observations to plan engaging activities that support deeper thinking and exploration. Through stories, imaginative play, music, discussion and creative opportunities, children are encouraged to ask questions about the world around them and develop an open-minded approach to learning.
A much-loved part of our school year is our Cultural and International Day, which brings our whole school community together in celebration. Children and staff are invited to wear traditional clothing that reflects their culture, heritage or family background, helping children to feel proud of who they are and where they come from. Throughout the day, children take part in a range of experiences inspired by countries from around the world, including tasting food, exploring music, sharing stories and engaging in creative activities. These shared experiences promote enjoyment, curiosity and a strong sense of togetherness.
Celebrating culture in this way supports children’s personal, social and emotional development and helps them to understand the importance of fairness, equality and respect. Children learn that everyone has a voice and that differences should be celebrated rather than questioned. Through turn-taking, listening to others and working cooperatively, children begin to develop early understanding of democracy and the importance of living harmoniously within a community.
We recognise the vital role that families play in enriching children’s learning. By working in close partnership with parents and carers, we are able to reflect the wide range of experiences, traditions and cultures represented within our school. This collaborative approach helps children to feel a strong sense of belonging and ensures that our environment is welcoming, inclusive and reflective of the world around them.
By embedding these values from the very beginning of a child’s education, we aim to nurture confident, caring and respectful learners who are prepared not only for the next stage of their schooling, but for life beyond the classroom. Our commitment to celebrating diversity helps children to grow into thoughtful individuals who are curious about the world and ready to take their place within it.

Across EYFS, children enjoyed a rich and engaging week celebrating cultures, people, and traditions from around the world.
In Pre-Nursery, the children had a wonderful time learning about different cultures and traditions. They proudly joined in with International Day, welcoming EYFS families who came in to share stories, sing songs, and take part in craft activities. The children also enjoyed learning American Sign Language and Welsh through interactive sessions, as teachers shared the different languages they know. It was a fantastic week full of collaboration, curiosity, and fun.
Nursery children had an exciting and colourful week celebrating Culture Week. They explored a world map and learned about the different nationalities and countries represented within their class community. The children enjoyed looking at a variety of flags and discussing the special places they are connected to. On International Day, they sampled snacks from different countries, sang songs in different languages, and explored a range of cultural experiences. A special highlight was creating beautiful Welsh love spoon collages, inspired by Miss Claire’s culture, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
In Reception, the children had a wonderful time learning about different cultures from around the world. They explored Miss Sioned’s Welsh culture and listened to the story of Saint Dwynwen, the Saint of lovers, before creating their own wooden spoons to give to someone, following Welsh traditions. The children learned different languages from different teachers, practising new words and learning how to say “help” in a variety of languages, supporting their understanding of communication. They explored and compared flags from different countries and designed their own versions, showing great creativity. Through stories such as Trouble with Trolls, Tikki Tikki Tembo, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Strega Nona, children discussed where they are from and identified their places on a map, developing their understanding of the wider world. In mathematics, they learned about mass, comparing objects using language such as light, heavy, lighter, heavier, and balanced through practical activities.
It has been a truly memorable week across EYFS, filled with learning, celebration, creativity, and togetherness.
