Our School

The British School in the heart of Shanghai

Britannica International School is a British school located in the heart of Shanghai, providing a British style education to international families with children 2 – 18. The school was established in 2013 and is part of the Orbital Education group of schools.

Bringing the Best of British Education to Shanghai, Britannica is a British Owned and Managed British school and is staffed with British teachers. Within fifteen minutes of The Former French Concession and centrally located in Shanghai, we have already gained a reputation as first choice British school for discerning Shanghai families. With over forty different nationalities represented in the school it has a true international feel to its student population while retaining a strong British ethos at its core and delivering the very best of British independent school education. Our teachers are all experienced and fully trained educationalists, committed to school’s vision and mission and making your child’s time at school both enjoyable and rewarding. Close personal mentoring and pastoral care of each individual child ensures that they thrive in our family feel environment. Leading edge classroom technology, resources and school facilities mean that the educational experience of your child will be second to none in the city.

The English National Curriculum lies at the core of our educational programme; with the high academic standards that it represents and the world recognised external examinations that it leads to. Current pupils are working towards their IGCSE examinations in Year 11 and will later go on to follow courses in A Level at sixth form with us. Highly developed assessment procedures are in place to ensure that a pupil’s baseline knowledge is fully understood at entrance and their progress carefully monitored in the time they spend with us. Pupils are encouraged to accept the challenges of appropriately high academic targets and achieve their personal best in all that they do. Emphasising a personalised approach to education means that the school recognises the needs to adapt and be creative with its curriculum , teaching and pupil learning to meet the needs of individual students.

The school encourages a sense of formality, while not neglecting the fact that children need time to be creative, explore their own interests, play with their friends, take a lead in developing a sense of responsibility, make and learn from mistakes , have a growing empathy for the needs of others and understand their role as a team player as well as a team leader. Britannica is committed to creating leaders out of today’s learners and an understanding in pupils of their role as effective global citizens.

Britannica is a small school with a big heart!

My daughter has been at the school for 3 months and already I am surprised and thrilled that you have taken her on a residential trip, had a sport's day and an international day. I am now looking forward to the swimming gala and the 'Wizard of Oz' show.

In Lizzie's words - Mum, it's just like my school in UK!

Well done, Britannica!

Catherine (Mother of Year 10 Student)

We have two children at Britannica who joined when the Shanghai school opened. Better than any other school in Puxi, the school gives us the best of both worlds - not too big so our kids don't get lost amongst a 1000 students and every teacher knows every kid, yet also great teachers and small classes so our kids get PROPER attention. Both my wife and I and our kids love it.

Addison (Father of Year 5 and Year 7 Students)
