The past creates the present.
Our modern world exists because of events that happened long before our time. Only by understanding those events can we know how we got here, and where to go next. History helps us understand change; it is full of transitions that have altered the world’s story. When our students build their knowledge of history, they also gain a deeper understanding about how our present-day society was created.
This term at Britannica, our History students are diving into some truly important topics. Year 6 are learning about the ancient empires of Rome, Persia and China. Year 7 are studying the European colonisation of the Americas that started in the 1500s. These topics illustrate how empires rise and fall over time, and how cultures mix and affect each other. Year 8 are beginning their study of the history of slavery, exploring its origins, impact, and legacies. It's a challenging but vital subject that encourages thoughtful discussion and empathy. Meanwhile, Year 9 are continuing their work on the Second World War. We'll be examining causes, key events, and the experiences of those who lived through it - always a fascinating and powerful unit. At the top end of the school, our hardworking Year 11 and Year 13 students are preparing to sit their History examinations in the coming weeks. The Year 11s will be writing about international relations, while the Year 13s will write about interwar Europe and the Cold War. These exams will test the students’ ability to explain events, reach judgements and analyse sources. They have shown great dedication, and we are proud of the effort they have put in throughout the year. By revising consistently and practicing their writing techniques, the students can achieve results to be proud of. We wish them the very best of luck!
