It’s been a wonderfully busy term in the Music Department, with more student-led projects and performances than ever before. One of the most exciting developments has been the way our secondary students are increasingly forming their own ensembles, writing and rehearsing in their own time, and showing real independence in their musical journeys. In fact, we often now have more music than we have performance slots — a good problem to have!

To help address this, we’ll be holding a tea-time concert on Thursday 19th June, showcasing some of the fantastic work happening both in class and in our after-school activities. Invitations have been sent to parents of performers, but there may be extra seats available. If other parents would like to attend, please contact Mr. Muzyczka, and we’ll be happy to let you know if space allows.

Curriculum Highlights

Year 6 have been working with Mr. Benson on an innovative hip-hop and beat-boxing project. Students have written their own raps inspired by scientific concepts, layering in beat-box patterns and bass lines using some of our new music technology equipment.

In Year 7, students have been immersing themselves in the world of ska and reggae. Their work will culminate in a lively performance of Roots Rock Reggae at the tea-time concert, featuring a number of talented students who will be performing on our school stage for the first time.

Year 8 have been developing their piano skills through a salsa project, working in small ensembles to perfect a rhythmically rich, syncopated piece. Meanwhile, Year 9 have explored Scottish folk music as a means of improving their aural training and ensemble coordination — a valuable project that’s helped sharpen listening and group rehearsal skills.

We’d also like to give a special mention to Vittoria Ritsu and Risa Wang, who recently took their music beyond the school gates, performing at a weekend charity event in support of Bloodline. Not only did they help raise money for an important cause, but they also represented the school with confidence, generosity and musical flair.
