Mental health awareness is crucial in fostering a supportive environment where students can thrive emotionally and academically. In Primary, we prioritise student well-being, ensuring that mental health is at the heart of our educational approach. The week participated in Mental Health Awareness Week, centered on the theme of community. This initiative provided a platform for open discussions, reflection, and connection among our students.
Throughout the week, key assemblies were held for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, focusing on the importance of mental health and the role of community in supporting one another. In KS1, the assembly focused on the importance of yoga as a tool for supporting mental health. Students were introduced to simple yoga poses and breathing exercises designed to promote relaxation and mindfulness. Through fun demonstrations and interactive participation, children learned how yoga can help them manage their emotions and reduce stress.
In KS2, the assembly discussed the impact of gratitude, kindness and empathy. Students were encouraged to share examples of how they can support their peers, whether through listening, offering help, or simply being a friend.
Focused PSHE lessons throughout the week further reinforced these messages. In these sessions, students engaged in discussions about mental health, learning strategies for coping with stress and anxiety. Activities included mindfulness exercises, creative expression through art, and group discussions that allowed students to share their thoughts and experiences in a safe space. These lessons highlighted the importance of community support and the collective responsibility of looking after one another’s mental well-being.
As we reflect on Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud of the growth in understanding and empathy demonstrated by our students. By fostering a supportive community, we are equipping our students with the knowledge and skills to prioritise their mental health and support their peers.
