Literacy Week was a truly fantastic celebration of reading, writing and communication, with children across the school enthusiastically taking part in a wide range of exciting activities. From the very start of the week, there was a wonderful buzz around the school as children embraced every opportunity to explore language, stories and creativity.
Throughout the week, children enjoyed a variety of engaging morning literacy challenges, including story starters, vocabulary games, book cover design, reading relays and character charades. These activities encouraged imagination, teamwork and confidence, while helping children to develop key literacy skills in fun and memorable ways. It was wonderful to see so many children eager to participate and share their ideas with one another.
A special focus of the week was the importance of oracy – the ability to express ideas clearly and communicate effectively through speaking and listening. Across different subjects, children took part in discussions, storytelling, explaining their mathematical thinking and sharing their opinions. Developing strong oracy skills is essential, as it builds confidence, deepens understanding and prepares children to become thoughtful, articulate learners.
There was also great excitement surrounding our competitions, including the story writing challenge, spelling quizzes and the ever-popular Extreme Readers competition. Children demonstrated incredible creativity and enthusiasm, both in school and at home, showing that reading can happen anywhere and everywhere.
One of the biggest highlights of the week, as always, was World Book Day. The school was filled with colour and excitement as children and staff dressed as their favourite book characters. The costume parade was a joyful celebration of books and storytelling, and the class posters showcased the children’s love of reading in a wonderfully creative way. It was a magical day that captured the spirit of the entire week.
The Book Fair and Book Swap were also hugely successful, giving children the chance to discover new stories and share their love of books with others. Seeing children so excited to choose books and recommend favourites to friends was a real pleasure.
Overall, Literacy Week was an outstanding success. The children thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and it was inspiring to see their enthusiasm for reading, writing and speaking grow throughout the week. A huge thank you to all staff, families and children who helped make the week such a memorable and enriching experience.
