On March 8th, we proudly join communities around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day. This is a moment to recognise the achievements of women and reflect on the importance of equality and opportunity for all. This year, we placed a special focus on Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), highlighting the vital role women have played, and continue to play, in shaping our world.

Throughout this week, we explored why celebrating women in STEM truly matters. Despite great progress, women remain underrepresented in many scientific and technological fields. By honouring the contributions of female scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and innovators, we not only celebrate their accomplishments but also help to challenge stereotypes and inspire the next generation to aim high.

During this week’s assembly, our students shared why they were inspired by women in STEM. We heard about Margaret Hamilton, whose software development for the Apollo missions was crucial to the moon landings; Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin, a Nobel laureate who advanced the science of X-ray crystallography; and Ada Lovelace, often recognised as the world’s first computer programmer. The confidence and enthusiasm with which our students presented these stories were truly inspiring. A group of our secondary students marked the occasion with a special International Women’s Day breakfast hosted by Mr. Farrell. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the significance of the day and to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women within our own school community. As teachers, it is always a privilege to see our students engage so thoughtfully with such powerful role models. When young people see individuals who represent them succeeding in STEM, those ambitions begin to feel possible and within reach.

To all the women and girls across our school community — students, parents, carers, teachers, and support staff — we wish you a very Happy International Women’s Day. Thank you for the many ways you inspire and contribute to our school every day.
