The final two days of our inaugural Student Leadership Conference brought focused, practical sessions and a celebratory finale, giving visiting and host students time to consolidate learning, reflect on their development and plan next steps.

Day 4: Effective communication and leading without authority

Day 4 concentrated on the core skills every young leader needs: clear communication, active listening and the ability to lead when you do not hold formal power.

  • Effective communication: Through a mix of workshops and interactive exercises, students explored how to craft clear messages, adapt tone for different audiences and use non‑verbal signals to reinforce meaning. Activities included short presentation clinics where students practiced structuring a concise message and paired listening exercises that emphasised the importance of curiosity and open questions in building trust.
  • Leading without authority: In themed challenges and case studies, students examined how influence, empathy and credibility enable leadership from any position. Groups tackled scenarios requiring collaborative problem‑solving without appointed leaders, rotating facilitators and reflecting on what strategies helped the group succeed. The focus was on persuasion, modelling behaviour, and creating inclusive environments where every voice is heard.

Day 4 closed with small‑group reflections: students noted how better listening improved group outcomes, and how subtle shifts in language and posture can strengthen their influence in peer contexts.

Day 5: Reflection, future goals and celebration

The conference’s final day offered structured reflection and planning to turn insight into action.

  • Reflection sessions: Students produced personal leadership summaries, identifying one strength, one area to develop and concrete next steps to practise their skills back in school. Peer‑feedback circles provided positive, actionable comments, and staff facilitated short coaching conversations to help translate intention into achievable goals.
  • Future goals: Each participant wrote a two‑term leadership action plan, specifying one project or behaviour change they would lead, the steps required, anticipated challenges and measures of success. Plans ranged from peer mentoring schemes to organising a sustainability campaign, demonstrating both ambition and practical thinking.
  • Celebration trip to Shanghai Disneyland: To mark the close of a busy and rewarding week, students and staff enjoyed a trip to Shanghai Disneyland. The visit provided a relaxed space for informal bonding, laughter and shared memories — a fitting end to a conference built on collaboration and curiosity.

Across Days 4 and 5 students left with clearer communication tools, a stronger understanding of how to lead with influence rather than authority, and personalised plans to sustain their development. The combination of focused workshops, peer feedback and reflective planning ensured the conference concluded with purpose and momentum.

We extend our thanks to the visiting students and staff from our Orbital Education partner schools for their energy and insight, and to our own students and team for hosting a week of thoughtful discussion and meaningful learning. The Student Leadership Conference has been an inspiring start to ongoing leadership work across our community.
